Willliam Eythe
WILLIAM EYTHE. Vintage 8x10 glossy black and white head and shoulders publicity portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen, "To Ray -/Best Wishes/William Eythe." Fine condition, with mild handling bends in the background above his head and along a small area of the extreme right edge, not substantially detracting from the overall appearance of the image. A promising contract player with Twentieth Century-Fox, William Eythe's career was given a boost by the departure of other Hollywood leading men for military service during World War II. Eythe, who had a hearing impairment, was 4-F. His sensationalized dalliance with young screen heartthrob Lon McCallister, however, caused Darryl F. Zanuck to terminate his contract, and his career quickly deteriorated. Ultimately, he turned to alcohol, dying of hepatitis in 1957 at the age of 38.
