Louise Fazenda
LOUISE FAZENDA. Vintage 1920s 7x9 matte finish black and white chest-up studio portrait, signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, "To/Ethel G. Charles/Sincere good wishes/from/Louise Fazenda." Near fine condition, with slightly unevenly trimmed borders; a single pin hole in each corner; small bends to the top and bottom right corner tips; and the writing very slightly faded but still quite readable. The goofy, high-spirited comic actress appeared in about 150 comedy shorts, a majority of them under the direction of Mack Sennett, and played supporting roles in scores of full-length films during the silent era. She made a smooth transition to sound, and continued working throughout the 1930s, albeit at a less frantic pace. In this photograph she radiates a more sophisticated image than her signature role as a naive country bumpkin, a fond caricature that provided the template for such later entertainers as Judy Canova and Minnie Pearl.
