The peppy actress was one of Universal Pictures' top stars in the 1920s, appearing in dramas, comedies and mysteries. With the transition to talkies, she starred and sang in the first screen version of Show Boat (1929). In 1931, she relocated to England, where she appeared in a half-dozen so-called "quota quickies." There she met British film producer Irving Asher, marrying him in 1934 and fairly promptly retiring from the screen.
