Eva Le Gallienne
EVA Le GALLIENNE. Vintage 8x10 glossy black and white chest-up portrait, boldly signed in black fountain pen, Sincerely/Eva LeGallienne/8-1-37." Very fine condition. This photograph is part of the in-person "Sanford" collection. Although Eva Le Gallienne's acting career spanned seven decades, she left little visual record, devoting herself almost exclusively to theatre. As director of the Civic Repertory Theatre in New York from 1926-36, she threw herself into the thankless task of bringing classical European drama to American audiences. In 1980, at the age of 81, she made her third and final film appearance, as Ellen Burstyn's grandmother in Resurrection, receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Vintage signed photographs are surprisingly scarce.
