Eubie Blake
EUBIE BLAKE (2). Eight handwritten bars of music and lyrics to "I'm Just Wild About Harry," penned in 1978 on an 11x14 sheet of printed music staves. Accompanied by an ALS, on the letterhead of Eubie Blake Music, October 30, 1978, to the recipients of the music, Rev. and Mrs. Johnson. In full: "Dear friends - Your letter of - there was no date on the letter. The date on the envelope I couldn't make out. This very day I will write you a few bars of 'I'm Just Wild About Harry.' I have sent you 8 bars of 'I'm Just Wild About Harry' as you requested. I thank you for being interested in my music." Both items in very fine condition. "I'm Just Wild About Harry" was the best-known song from the score of Shuffle Along, the 1921 musical by Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle, which became the first play written by and performed by African-Americans to be performed on Broadway. This is only the second handwritten iteration of the song that I have seen in 30 years.
