WILLIAM S. HART. Vintage signature in black fountain pen on an off-white sheet, about 5×4. Fine condition, with a few very mild yellowish stains, the largest of which can easily be matted out. Initially acclaimed as a Shakespearian actor onstage, William S. Hart became fascinated by the history of the American West and began playing cowboys in film, emerging as a star in 1914. His stark, lean morality tales fell out of favor by 1925 but remain eminently watchable, and Hart retains his status as the screen’s first Western star.
