UPTON SINCLAIR. Vintage 7×10 matte finish sepia tone half, length portrait of the tireless muckraking novelist and Socialist crusader, boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, “To Betty with love/Upton Sinclair.” Fine condition, with a few small handling bends, mostly in the borders; patches of light silvering; and a speck of soiling on his forehead. Sinclair’s 1906 novel The Jungle, about the meatpacking industry, caused a public sensation and contributed to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Law later that year. This photograph is dated 1932 on the reverse side.
