Signed by the Red Sox at age 17 , outfielder Tony Conigliaro’s baseball career was cut short when he was hit by a pitch that permanently damaged his eyesight. Following several comeback attempts , he assayed a second career as a sportscaster , but was felled by a heart attack and subsequent stroke , dying at age 45.
