RICHARD BARTHELMESS. Sepia tone 7.3 x 10 head and shoulders book-weight portrait, with printed biography below, removed from the 1930 edition of “Stars of the Photoplay, ” boldly signed and inscribed in the early 1960s in black fountain pen, To John Richard Barthelmess.” Image by Elmer Fryer. Very mild creasing along the length of the extreme right edge; otherwise very fine condition. The Oscar-nominated silent screen star made a smooth transition to sound, but his popularity declined by 1933, and despite several fine, tough performances in 1934 and 1935, he was unable to re-establish his former leading man status. He retired permanently from the screen in 1942 and lived comfortably off real estate investments for the rest of his life, reportedly embittered by the undeserved flameout of his acting career.
