RALPH GRAVES. Sepia tone 7.2 x 10 head and shoulders book-weight portrait, with printed biography below, removed from the 1930 edition of “Stars of the Photoplay, ” boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, “To John/with my best/Ralph Graves.” A signed image of silent screen leading lady Jetta Goudal appears on the reverse side. A pencil notation along the extreme top edge indicates that this image was signed in person in May 1972. A very mild bend to the top left corner tip; otherwise very fine condition. Ralph Graves began his film career as a comic actor, appearing opposite such stars as Marion Davies and Mabel Normand. By the end of the 1920s he was being cast in he-man roles, including in such early Frank Capra films as Submarine (1928), Flight (1929), and Dirigible (1931). In all, he appeared in 91 films before his final performance in 1949. This is the first signed image I have ever encountered.
