The diplomat and civil rights activist was intensely involved in the formation of the United Nations and, along with Eleanor Roosevelt, instrumental in the creation and adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950 he became the first African-American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
