Unexpected vintage 9×12 matte finish black and white chest-up publicity portrait, by Bloom of Chicago, boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, “To Joseph A. Whitacre/Sincerely/Dorothy McNulty/’Good News’/May 1928.”  Fine condition, with trimmed borders.  Born Mariana Dorothy McNulty, Penny Singleton entered show business in the 1920s, acting onstage and in small roles on the screen as Dorothy McNulty through 1937, after which she changed her billing to Penny Singleton  This is not only the earliest signed photograph of her that I have ever encountered, but also the only one I have seen signed with her original name.
