NOAH BEERY. Vintage 1920s 9.7 x 12.7 matte finish silver tone half-length studio portrait by Nelson Evans of L.A., signed and inscribed across his right hand in black fountain pen, “To Mrs. Griffin/Here’s to/you//[indecipherable] Sincerely/Noah Beery.” Fine condition, with unevenly trimmed borders; a bit of surface chipping along the left edge; scattered mild handling bends in his jacket and the background; and the writing somewhat faded, affecting the inscription more than the signature. The brother of Wallace Beery, Noah Beery was one of the most scurrilous villains of the silent screen. He made a smooth transition to sound films, where his behavior did not much improve. Signed photographs are relatively uncommon, this being the first in oversize format that I have ever encountered.
