NILS ASTHER. Sepia tone 7×10 head and shoulders book-weight portrait, with printed biography below, removed from the 1930 edition of “Stars of the Photoplay, ” boldly signed and inscribed in the early 1960s in black fountain pen, “To very best/+ have a wonderful/time over here/Nils Asther.” Photo by Ruth Harriet Louise. Very mild handling bends to three corner tips; otherwise very fine condition. Danish actor Nils Asther’s talent and suave good looks propelled him to leading man status in the waning days of the silent era, but with the coming of sound his accent forced him increasingly into exotic character roles. His best-known appearance during this era was the title character in Frank Capra’s The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933). Signed images are extremely scarce.
