MARY WELLS. Uncommon vintage signature and inscription, “To/Jack/Love/from/Mary Wells, “ in blue fountain pen on a 5×3 white index card. Very fine condition. This autograph is part of the John Verzi collection but is a signature that he acquired from another collector. One of the early breakout stars of Motown, Mary Wells had numerous popular hits, especially the Smokey Robinson song, “My Guy, ” which became her signature song. In 1990 she was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. After medical treatments left her virtually bankrupt, other singers and admirers donated money to pay her medical bills, an effort that culminated in a benefit concert organized by Anita Baker. Wells died in 1993.
