Scarce vintage 7.6 x 9.4 sepia tone chest-up portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in green fountain pen, “To Helene -/with my friendship’/ALWAYS’/MAL.”  Fine condition, with very slightly trimmed borders; a mild stain in the background at the top right corner; and a mild handling bend at the bottom left.  Starting as a member of the Keystone Kops, Mal St. Clair soon switched to writing and directing, showing a knack for slapstick comedy and action films. If none of the films in his three-decade career could quite be considered as classics, he nonetheless worked with a Who’s Who of Hollywood celebrities, including Joan Crawford, Pola Negri, Jean Arthur, William Powell, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Laurel and Hardy, Clara Bow, Adolphe Menjou, etc., etc. This is only the second signed photograph of him I have ever encountered.
