Vintage 3.5 x 5.5 glossy black and white half-length studio portrait, boldly signed and inscribed to the bottom border in black fountain pen, “Au Film Club Goulier/Sympathequement  Louis Jouvet.”  Fine condition, with patches of faint silvering to the darker areas, completely invisible when the photograph is viewed head on.  One of France’s great stage actors, Louis Jouvet also appeared in more than thirty films during the golden age of French cinema, working with most of the great French directors, including Renoir, Carne, Duvivier, Tourneur, and Clouzot, in such films as Carnival in Flanders (1935), The Lower Depths (1936), Bizarre, Bizarre (1937), and Volpone (1941). This is only the fourth signed Jouvet photograph that I have ever seen.
