LILI DARVAS. Vintage 8×10 semi-glossy black and white half-length publicity portrait by Vandamm Studio for Waltz of the Toreodors, a Broadway production in which the actress appeared in 1958, boldly signed in turquoise fountain pen. One tiny bend in the bottom border; otherwise very fine condition. Hungarian-born actress Lili Darvas was the wife of playwright Ferenc Molnar, who wrote several plays for her, and also became a regular member of Max Reinhardt’s theatrical troupe during the 1930s. Fleeing Europe following 1938, she settled in the United States, carving a career on the stage, screen, and television, usually in supporting roles. Her final film, Love (1971), shot in Hungary, afforded her a rare chance to play the lead, which she did to brilliant and heartbreaking effect.
