Vintage 1930s 11×14 double-weight satin finish chest-up studio portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, “To Dave/best always/Leon Errol.”  Very good condition, with areas of light staining in the top and bottom right borders; a vertical tear at the top center, intruding about half an inch into the background above his head; a small bit of paper loss to the bottom right corner tip, not affecting the image; and light creasing and a small tear along a portion of the right border.  After headlining and directing on Broadway for close to two decades, Leon Errol moved to Hollywood in 1930, appearing in scores of films and comedy shorts until his death in 1951. Among his best-remembered performances were those opposite Lupe Velez in the Mexican Spitfire series that appeared between 1939 and 1943.
