JOHN BOLES. Sepia tone 7.3 x 10 head and shoulders book-weight portrait, with printed biography below, removed from the 1930 edition of “Stars of the Photoplay, ” boldly signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen, “To John/from/John Boles/1961/Oct. 26.” Image by Freulich. Fine condition, with a slightly ragged left edge; and a trio of very mild handling bends in the borders that do not substantially detracct from overall appearance. The handsome, stolid, personality-free leading man of the 1930s appeared prominently in such classic weepies as Back Street (1932) and Stella Dallas (1937), as well as the original Frankenstein (1931). He had a fine singing voice and made dutiful, passionless love to such screen beauties as Barbara Stanwyck, Irene Dunne, Jean Muir and Claire Trevor.
