JOHN STUART

Vintage 3.5 x 5.5 double-weight glossy black and white chest-up portrait, signed in blue fountain pen, “Sincerely yours/John Stuart.”  Near very fine condition, with the writing largely penned against the dark fabric of his suit jacket, with moderate contrast.  The British actor had a six-decade stage, screen and television career, making his screen debut in 1920.  During the silent era, he played dashing romantic leads and was thought of as Britain’s answer to Rudolph Valentino.  He made a smooth transition to sound, gradually easing into character roles, appearing on well over 100 films.  His final big screen appearance was a bit role in Superman (1978), a year before his death.
