A member of the Czech New Wave, Jiri Menzel achieved international acclaim following the release of his first feature film, Closely Watched Trains, in 1967, which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Since then, he has worked as an actor, screenwriter, and director, whose features include Larks on a String (1969), and My Sweet Little Village (1985), also nominated for an Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film.
