HELEN MORGAN. Vintage 7.5 x 9.5 matte finish sepia tone chest-up portrait of the troubled singer and actress, boldly signed in black fountain pen. Fine condition, with slightly uneven ink adhesion, especially to the last two letters of her surname. A popular torch singer of the 1920s, whose tear-laced voice could melt the hardest heart, Helen Morgan originated the role of Julie in the Broadway production of Show Boat, a role she reprised in the peerless 1936 film version. She died of cirrhosis of the liver at age 41.
