HELEN MENKEN. Vintage signature and inscription, “To John/Helen Menken, “ in black fountain pen on a 6×4 white index card. Very fine condition, with a small magazine photograph affixed at the top left corner. Undated on the reverse side. John Verzi collection. Celebrated stage actress Helen Menken was also the first wife of Humphrey Bogart, wedding him in May 1926. In 1927, Menken was arrested following her performance in The Captive a lesbian-themed drama. Bogaart divorced her shortly thereafter, and the notoriety engendered by her arrest perhaps scuttled the possibility of a film career. She continued to appear on Broadway through the mid-1930s, later appearing on radio and working for the American Theater Wing for several decades.
