GERARD PHILIPE. Vintage 10×14 matte finish single-weight black and white chest-up costume portrait, signed with his name alone in blue ballpoint on his tunic. Fine condition, with a minor bend along the top left edge and very slight paper loss at the bottom right corner tip. The signature is a shade light, but considerably clearer on the actual photograph than it appears in the accompanying scan. The most popular French leading man of his generation, hailed for both his stage and screen performances, Gerard Philipe died of cancer in 1959 at age 36. Signed photographs are, understandably, relatively uncommon. This is the only signed photograph of Philipe larger than postcard size that I have ever seen.
