GEORGE RAFT

GEORGE RAFT. Original vintage 8×10 double-weight pearl finish black and white three-quarter length profile portrait of a dapper-looking Raft relaxing in a smoking jacket, from Night After Night (1932, and Mae West’s screen debut), signed and inscribed in later years in blue ballpoint ink, “To Tom/My Best/George Raft.” Fine condition, with a few very mild handling bends in the borders, two bends lightly intruding into the background at the top right (visible only when the photograph is angled into the light); and small patches of faint silvering (also visible only when the photograph is angled into the light. The writing, impossible to see in the accompanying scan, is penned in the background at the lower left, and is a shade light but reasonably readable, with portions of the signature penned against his smoking jacket (and, appropriately, best visible only when the photograph is angled into the light). An uncommonly appealing image of the screen tough guy.
