GABBY HAYES. Scarce vintage 10 x 13.25 matte finish black and white chest-up portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, “To Edna Mathison/Best wishes/’Gabby’ Hayes.” Fine condition, with slightly unevenly trimmed borders and a mild background bend just above his right arm, not substantially detracting from the overall appearance of the image. The scruffy old geezer appeared in nearly 200 films, usually playing a sidekick to such Western stars as Bill Boyd, John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Randolph Scott. Offscreen, he was well-bred, well-read, and expressed his intense dislike of Westerns, which he found hackneyed and repetitious. Signed photographs in oversize format are exceptionally uncommon.
