The versatile British actress enjoyed a six-decade career, playing leading roles onscreen in the 1920s and ’30s, appearing onstage as Ophelia opposite John Barrymore’s Hamlet, and later moving to supporting character roles in such films as Laughter in Paradise (1951) and The Haunting (1963). From the mid-1950s until her retirement in 1970 she appeared on numerous British television series, usually as a frosty, strong-willed dowager.
