Bold signature and inscription, “To/John my/Son In His/precious name/Ethel Waters,” in turquoise fountain pen on a 6×4 white index card.  Very fine condition.  A pencil notation on the reverse side indicates that this autograph was obtained in person in August 1961.  John Verzi collection.  Ethel Waters was the second African-American performer, after Hattie McDaniel, to win an Oscar nomination, for her performance in Pinky (1950). She began as a blues, jazz and pop singer, nicknamed “Sweet Mama Stringbean.” Later in life she found religion and became a lot less fun.
