Vintage 8×10 matte finish sepia tone chest-up studio portrait, signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen, “To Margaret,/with best wishes/Erik Rhodes.”  Fine condition, with the writing largely against the dark fabric of his jacket, best observed by angling the photograph slightly into the light, although the signature is marginally clearer than the inscription.  With his facility for foreign accents, character actor Erik Rhodes played excitable, addled Continental types in a dozen of so films of the 1930s, most memorably in Top Hat (1935). Thereafter, he was seen onstage and occasionally on television for an additional 35 years.
