Vintage 7×9 matte finish black and white chest-up portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen, “To/George Kemble Simon/With all kindest regards/Sincerely Yours/Edward Arnold/1917.”  Fine condition, with neatly trimmed borderrs and a small vertical tear in his jacket lapel at the bottom edge.  Edward Arnold made his screen debut in 1916 at the age of 25 and during 1917 appeared almost exclusively in two-reelers, making little headway.  In 1920 he made his final silent screen appearance, returning exclusively to the stage until his return to films in 1932.  Signed photographs from this very early phase of his career are extremely scarce.
