Bold signature and inscription, “To John/Best wishes/Diana Sands,” in blue fountain pen on a 6×4 white index card.  Very fine condition.  A pencil notation on the reverse side indicates that this autograph was obtained in person in December 1964.  John Verzi collection.  Diana Sands’ breakthrough performance was as Beneatha Younger in the original Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun, a role she repeated in the 1961 film version. Sands appeared in another half dozen Broadway production over the next decade, including roles by Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw normally reserved for white actresses, as well as making film and television appearances. Arguably one of the most gifted actresses of her generation, she died of cancer at age 39 in 1973. Autographed material in virtually any format is quite uncommon.
