Danish-born actress Asta Nielsen became one of the major stars of the German silent cinema, making her screen debut in 1910 and appearing in over 80 films through 1927. After retiring from the screen, she returned to Denmark and spent the rest of her career onstage, turning down an offer from Joseph Goebbels to return to Germany as the head of her own studio. Onscreen, she appeared in roles as diverse as Cleopatra, Hamlet (!), and Lulu in an early film version of Pandora’s Box.
