ANITA O’DAY

Sexy 8×10 glossy 1940s black and white chest-up publicity portrait, boldly signed in later years in blue felt tip ink.  Fine condition, with a somewhat shaky older age signature; and mild soiling in the top border, with just a few tiny spots of soiling touching the background of the image at the top right corner.  Iconic jazz singer Anita O’Day’s tumultuous 50-year career included notable stints with Gene Krupa, Stan Kenton and Benny Goodman, among other big bands, but she was determined to be known as a soloist and recorded numerous classic albums with only a small combo backing her up. A heroin addiction sidelined her career again and again, but she would always re-emerge for a triumphant comeback, performing almost up until her death at age 87
