The enormously popular Italian character actor was also a screenwriter, director and producer, frequently writing and directing screen vehicles that showcased his comic talents. He was best known to international audiences for his performance in Rome, Open City (1945), and also appeared in such films as The Angel Wore Red (1960), and We All Loved Each Other So Much (1974). The majority of his films, however, were seen largely by Italian audiences.
