Walt Whitman
WALT WHITMAN. Bold signature on a 4-1/2 x 3-1/3 white card inviting the recipient to call on Whitman at New York's Westminister Hotel on April 14, 1887. On that date, Whitman greeted guests following his commemorative lecture on the death of Abraham Lincoln. This particular invitation originated from the estate of Stephen Henry Thayer, a Wall Street banker, treasurer of the New York Authors Club, and financial editor of The Christian Union and Outlook. Fine condition, with extremely faint toning and an area of barely noticeable surface waviness resulting from mounting remnants on the reverse side.
