Paul Verlaine
PAUL VERLAINE. A receipt in the sum of ten francs for two autograph copies of his poem "Eventail Directoire," dated February 9, 1892, signed P. Verlaine. About fine condition, with the very thin paper, measuring 6x3, somewhat unevenly torn on three sides, and with two pencil notations in another hand. The influential 19th century symbolist poet is known both for his poetic works and his turbulent love affair with poet maudite Arthur Rimbaud. Imprisoned following his attempt to shoot Rimbaud, Verlaine turned to Catholicism, but later succumbed to drug addiction and alcoholism even as he continued to write and gain literary acclaim, dying in 1894 at the age of 51. Autographed material is extremely scarce.
