WILLIAM S. HART. Vintage 7.5 x 9.5 matte finish silver tone chest-up portrait of the steely-looking Western star, boldly signed and inscribed in purple fountain pen, "For/Sidney Kaufman/From/William S. Hart." Photo by Hoover Art Co. of L.A. Fine condition, with trimmed borders, tack holes in each corner, and thumb tack impressions in the top and bottom right corners. Initially acclaimed as a Shakespearian actor onstage, William S. Hart became fascinated by the history of the American West and began playing cowboys in film, emerging as a star in 1914. His stark, lean morality tales fell out of favor by 1925 but remain eminently watchable, and Hart retains his status as the screen's first Western star.
