SLIM SUMMERVILLE. Vintage 8x10 matte finish sepia tone chest-up portrait, circa 1935, boldly signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen, "With best/good wish to/you 'Pal'/'Slim' Summerville." Fine condition, with pinholes and a minor bend in the top border and a small spot of discoloration on is left cheek. The gangly comic actor entered film as a Keystone Kop in 1914, eventually becoming popular enough to star in his own series of comic short films, many of which he also directed. Making a smooth transition to sound, he was paired with ZaSu Pitts in a series of popular knockabout comedies and also appeared frequently as sidekick to Hoot Gibson. He also appeared in such prestigious films as All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), (1931), and Tobacco Road (1941).
