Sam Levene
SAM LEVENE. Vintage 8x10 glossy black and white lobby still from The Purple Heart (1944), boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, "To Howard/Sam Levene/1948." Fine condition, and a small area of very light yellow discoloration in the background at the top left. Character actor Sam Levene had a prolific stage and screen career that spanned more than 50 years. Onscreen, he appeared in thirty films, often cast as a street-smart, hard-nosed cop or robber in such memorable films as The Killers (1946), Brute Force, and Crossfire (both 1947). On Broadway, he created the roles of Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls and Al Lewis in The Sunshine Boys.
