Samuel Rothafel
SAMUEL "ROXY" ROTHAFEL. Vintage 8x10 matte finish sepia tone bust portrait, boldly inscribed in black fountain pen, "To/'Herman' C. Braude/Sincerely/'Roxy.'" Fine condition, with light waviness and tiny surface abrasions along the left and right borders. Showman and impresario Samuel "Roxy" Rothafel managed New York's premier movie palaces -- the Strand, the Rialto, the Capitol, and the eponymous Roxy Theater -- during the 1920s, introducing such innovations as live orchestras playing synchronized scores to accompany silent films. His crowning achievement came in 1932, when he opened Radio City Music Hall, where films were accompanied by lavish stage shows that included the synchronized dancing troupe, The Roxyettes. He remained the manager of the theater until his death in 1936.
