Richard Cromwell
RICHARD CROMWELL. Vintage 5x7 matte finish sepia tone head and shoulders portrait, circa 1935, signed in blue fountain pen, "Good luck/Dick Cromwell." Fine condition, with a mild bend to the bottom right corner tip; a small tear in the right border, not touching the image; and the writing penned almost entirely against the dark fabric of his jacket, but readable, although difficult to make out in the accompanying scan. The appealing juvenile lead of the 1930s was a smash in his film debut, Tol'able David (1930), and enjoyed success in such films as Clara Bow's swan song, Hoop-la (1933), and Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935). By the end of the 1930s he was playing supporting roles and, following service in World War II, returned for the most part to his first career, as a sculptor. He died of cancer at age 50 in 1950. Signed photographs are relatively uncommon.
