An accomplished Broadway actress, Pauline Frederick was already 32 years old when she made her screen debut in 1915, but her commanding screen presence made her a popular leading lady throughout the silent era. She made a successful transition to sound, playing in a handful of films before her death in 1938. The vast majority of the films from the height of her career are lost.
