NILS ASTHER. Scarce vintage 10x8 glossy sepia tone lobby portrait from The Night of January 16th (1941), boldly signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen, "To Josephine/with many thanks/and best of wishes/Yours/Nils Asther." Near fine condition, with a pinhole in the top border; a small tear in the bottom border; scattered creasing, mainly to the borders; and a soft diagonal bend in the background near the top right, slightly detracting from the overall appearance of the image. Danish actor Nils Asther's talent and suave good looks propelled him to leading man status in the waning days of the silent era, but with the coming of sound his accent forced him increasingly into exotic character roles. His best-known appearance during this era was the title character in Frank Capra's The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933).
