Jean Hersholt
JEAN HERSHOLT. Vintage 8x10 matte finish silver tone half-length costume portrait by Freulich, boldly signed inscribed in black fountain pen, "To my fiend/Larry/with thanks for his splendid directing/Jean Hersholt/'Erb' My Old Dutch/1925." "Larry" is director Laurence Trimble. Near very fine condition, with a small bend to the top right corner tip. Uncommon this early. Although best remembered today for the numerous kindly, avuncular roles he played in the later years of his career, such as Shirley Temple's grandfather in Heidi (1937) and the generous-hearted Dr. Christian, which he played in a popular series of films between 1939-41, Jean Hersholt was also effective as a screen villian, unexcelled as the vengeful, odious Marcus in Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1924).
