JAMES GLEASON. Scarce vintage 8x10 matte finish sepia tone chest-up publicity still from Orders Is Orders (1934), boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, "To/Sonny/I hope I can/direct your/first starring/picture/James Gleason/1934." Fine condition, with a single pinhole in each corner tip and slight paper loss to three of the corners, not affecting the image. The veteran character actor appeared in nearly 150 films over a three-decade career, often portraying street-smart cops, gamblers, editors, etc., with a gruff exterior that concealed a heart of gold underneath. During the 1930s he played Detective Oscar Piper in a long-running comedy/mystery series opposite Edna May Oliver.
