GLENN MILLER. Extremely uncommon vintage 8x10 glossy sepia tone half-length portrait of Miller in his Air Force uniform, signed with his name alone in blue fountain pen. Fine condition, with a bend at the top right corner and scattered very mild handling bends within the image. In 1942, Miller, still at the peak of his popularity as a big band leader, joined the Army out of a desire to aid the American war effort. After being transferred to the Air Force, Miller formed a band that entertained at military bases, then began a radio show, "I Service the Wings," broadcasting weekly. In the summer of 1944 Miller's Army Air Force Band received permission to fly to Europe, where they performed more than 800 concerts for American troops. On December 15, 1944, en route to perform for the troops in France, Miller's plane disappeared over the English Channel, possibly shot down in a friendly fire incident.
