Eva Le Gallienne
EVA Le GALLIENNE (2). Original vintage 8x10 double-weight satin finish seia tone publicity portrait, by Gilbert Pinchot, for Prelude to Exile, which opened on Broadway November 30, 1936, boldly signed in later years in black felt tip ink. Fine condition, with a small smudge to the final letter of the signature. Although Eva Le Gallienne's acting career spanned seven decades, she left little visual record, devoting herself almost exclusively to theatre. As director of the Civic Repertory Theatre in New York from 1926-36, she threw herself into the thankless task of bringing classical European drama to American audiences. In 1980, at the age of 81, she made her third and final film appearance, as Ellen Burstyn's grandmother in Resurrection, receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
