Ernest Torrence
ERNEST TORRENCE. Vintage 8x10 matte finish sepia tone profile portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, "To F. Lawrence Johnson/very sincerely/Ernest Torrence." Slightly trimmed borders; otherwise very fine condition. Character actor Ernest Torrence was one of the great villains of the silent screen era, but also did some memorable comic turns, including his performance as Buster Keaton's father in Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928). He made a smooth transition to sound, continuing his villainous ways as Prof. Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes (1932) and a brutal smuggler in I Cover the Waterfront (1933) before his untimely death at age 54. Signed photographs are extremely uncommon.
