Constance Collier
CONSTANCE COLLIER. Vintage 3.5 x 5.5 matte finish sepia tone half-length portrait, circa 1910, boldly signed in black fountain pen at the base of the image. Fine condition, with a few tiny bends in the bottom border and faint silvering around the top and right edges, virtually invisible when the image is viewed head on. The lofty theatrical grande dame, a much-acclaimed Shakespearean, was associated with over 20 Broadway productions, as actress, writer, and director. In 1932, she memorably created the role of Carlotta Vance in Dinner at Eight, a role which would be played on film by Marie Dressler. Collier also appeared in more than two dozen films, one standout performance being Miss Luther, the manager of the theatrical boarding house in Stage Door (1937).
